Animal Feed Industry
The animal and pet
feed industry is a large user of both liquid and solids measuring devices and
is a great application for the M-Series range of flow meter products and
accessories. The portion of this industry where M-Series meters can be applied
is on the liquids and these include, tallow, molasses, and other additives.
Tallow is the
rendering of the waste from slaughtered animals and includes offal, fats, and
bone. The product comes in several
grades and each grade represents the ground size of the bone content. The viscosity is somewhere between 20 and
100cps. The product can be extremely abrasive and therefore selection of meter
material is very critical. The best
solution that we have found is for an M-Series Meter with stainless steel body
and stainless steel rotors as using this material combination adds longevity to
the meter and allows for easy maintenance.
Molasses is a bi-product
from sugar cane, and comes in several forms, some including particulates. It is important to ensure that these are of a
size that will pass through the meter. Generally the product is very thick and viscosity
can range from 5,000 cps to 16,500,000 cps.
It is therefore important to ascertain the flow range and select an
appropriate meter fitted with high viscosity rotors.
It is important to
remember that as a general rule high viscosity liquids are pumped at very low
flow rates. M-Series meters can
accurately measure flows of high viscosity fluids at extremely low velocities.
Accuracy of measurement is very important in this application as molasses
content will effect consumption and therefore stock yields.
Many other additives
including liquid vitamins and other conditioning and /or growth chemicals
are added in very low volumes and at low flow rates. Accuracy of measurement
is very important in this application as these additives affect the health
of the animals and due to the fact that these are generally high value products.
M-Series meters can accurately measure flows as low as 0.2 Gallons per Hour.

In
order to properly select the meter size and materials, we recommend you use
our online sizing and selection program. This is a step by step program that
will allow you to specify your fluid, flow rate, operating conditions, and
outputs and ensure you choose exactly the right meter for your specific flow
conditions.
